SB 1213 Summary

• Amends Michigan election law to require that when a petition contains duplicate signatures from the same elector, only the first signature shall be counted rather than invalidating all signatures.

• Adds new sections 482f and 547 establishing a duplicate signature counting rule for initiative petitions and nominating petitions respectively.

• Changes terminology throughout the election code from "person" to "individual" for consistency in describing petition signers and circulators.

• Removes language from section 482 warning about knowing violations related to signing petitions more than once, replacing it with notice that duplicate signatures will be counted only once.

• Repeals section 547a of the Michigan election law, effective 90 days after enactment.
