SB 1242 Summary

• Amends MCL 800.33 to replace "shall" with "must" throughout the provision and clarify language regarding good time credits for prisoners serving sentences for crimes committed before April 1, 1987.

• Eliminates the separate disciplinary credit system for prisoners convicted of crimes on or after April 1, 1987, consolidating all good time earnings under a single good time credit framework based on length of incarceration.

• Maintains major misconduct provisions preventing good time accumulation during months of guilty findings, with limits on forfeiture to the amount that would have been earned that month only.

• Repeals MCL 800.34 and 800.35 (sections 34 and 35 of 1893 PA 118) effective 90 days after enactment and requires the Department of Corrections to recalculate parole eligibility and discharge dates for affected prisoners.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment only if Senate Bill 1243 is also enacted into law (tie-bar provision).
