SB 1257 Summary

• Amends 2020 PA 238 to define additional worker categories including essential critical infrastructure workers, essential critical water and wastewater workers, food processors, and food processor employees.

• Prohibits employees who test positive for COVID-19 or display principal COVID-19 symptoms from reporting to work until fever-free for 24 hours without medication, 10 days have passed since symptom onset or positive test, and symptoms improve.

• Prohibits employees with close contact (within 6 feet for 15+ minutes) to someone with COVID-19 from working for 14 days or until the exposed individual receives medical determination they did not have COVID-19.

• Exempts certain essential workers from close contact restrictions: health care professionals and facility workers, first responders, child protective service employees, correctional facility workers, food processor employees, food and beverage distributors, and essential critical infrastructure or water/wastewater workers (if asymptomatic and following federal guidance).

• Defines "principal symptoms of COVID-19" as fever, shortness of breath, or uncontrolled cough; or two or more of abdominal pain, diarrhea, loss of taste/smell, muscle aches, severe headache, sore throat, or vomiting.
