Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners was established on January 31, 1997 at Chief Okemos Sportsman's Club in Dimondale, Michigan to defend and expand rights to responsible gun ownership.

MCRGO grew from initial volunteers to approximately 4,000 members by spring 2000 through creation of an internet talk list and website (MCRGO.org) in 1998.

Organization successfully advocated for Public Act 381 of 2000 (signed January 2, 2001) which reformed concealed carry permit issuance, Michigan's Self-Defense Act in 2006 eliminating duty to retreat, and 2015 concealed pistol license reform eliminating county gun boards.

MCRGO established a concealed pistol license training program in 2016 that certified over 42,000 students by the end of 2021 and is now the largest state-based firearms organization in the United States.

House of Representatives honors MCRGO members, volunteers, directors, and staff for promoting safe firearm use and ownership through education, litigation, and legislation over the past 25 years.
