SB 122 Summary

• Requires the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to conduct a risk assessment for environmental contamination on all riparian property (bordering Great Lakes or connecting waterways) currently or formerly used for industrial or commercial purposes, with completion by January 1, 2022.

• Risk assessments must rate each property as high-, medium-, or low-risk based on historic uses, hazardous substances, compliance status, inspection history, active monitoring status, water levels, and proximity to water supply intakes.

• Mandates the department develop and maintain a publicly accessible database on its website containing all assessed riparian properties and their risk ratings.

• Requires the risk assessment and database to be updated at least once every 5 years.
