Assault with a dangerous weapon against a health professional or medical volunteer performing their duties is punishable by up to 4 years imprisonment or a fine of up to $4,000, compared to the standard $2,000 fine for other assault victims.

Assault with a dangerous weapon in a weapon-free school zone is punishable by imprisonment of up to 4 years, community service of up to 150 hours, or a fine of up to $6,000.

Health facilities, hospitals, and psychiatric hospitals must post signs notifying the public that non-patients who assault health professionals or medical volunteers face enhanced fines, and that patient assailants may still face prosecution.

Health professionals and medical volunteers are defined to include individuals employed or contracted by hospitals and health facilities whose duties involve direct or indirect patient care requiring state licensure, registration, or certification.

The act takes effect 90 days after enactment and is contingent on House Bill 4520 being enacted into law.
