Beginning January 1, 2026, health professionals in pediatric and obstetric/gynecological settings shall offer mental health screenings to individuals in their postpartum period during follow-up appointments or well child visits if deemed appropriate.

Other health professionals may offer mental health screenings to postpartum individuals at follow-up appointments or well child visits until the child reaches 12 months of age.

The Michigan Department of Health may develop a screening tool, and health professionals may use evidence-based screening tools to assess maternal mental health or postpartum risk factors.

Health professionals who identify individuals needing additional mental health resources shall provide information on postpartum mental health conditions, treatment options, referrals, and other support services as appropriate.

"Health professional" is defined as an individual licensed, registered, or otherwise authorized to engage in a health profession under article 15 of the Public Health Code.
