HB 5171 Summary

• Amends the Social Security Act provisions in Michigan law to add mental health screenings during the postpartum period as a covered medical service under Medicaid.

• Mental health screenings must be provided during the postpartum period according to guidelines in section 9137 of the public health code.

• Requires the director to notify the public and obtain approval from both house and senate appropriations committees before implementing any changes to reimbursement methods or levels that would increase or decrease payments by 1% or more over 12 months.

• Takes effect April 2, 2025, but only if House Bill No. 5169 of the 102nd Legislature is also enacted into law.
