Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, all athletic coaches at high schools operated by school districts, intermediate school districts, public school academies, or nonpublic schools must maintain valid CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) certification from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or comparable department-approved organization.

Athletic coaches who perform CPR or use an AED in the course of their employment are protected from civil liability for damages, except in cases of gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct.

The requirement applies to coaches at all high schools regardless of whether they are operated by public school districts, intermediate school districts, charter schools (public school academies), or private schools.

Effective date is 91 days after the final adjournment of the 2024 Regular Session (Sine Die).
