Changes certification requirements for state correctional officers hired on or after January 1, 2025, requiring a high school diploma or GED, 2 months of supervised paid job training in a correctional facility, 320 hours of new employee training, and completion of other standards approved by the department.

Repeals previous transitional certification provisions for former Detroit House of Correction employees, department of mental health employees, and other specialized employee categories that previously had automatic certification periods.

Simplifies recertification requirements by requiring all officers employed on or after January 1, 2025 to meet minimum standards and requirements developed by the council and approved by the department, eliminating previous multi-year automatic recertification periods.

Allows the department to establish multiple central training academies (rather than just one) and permits community colleges and colleges approved by the council to offer the 320-hour new employee training certification program.

Repeals sections 10 and 11 of the original 1982 act and updates terminology throughout from "persons" to "individuals" and "shall" to "must."
