MI HB6034

Establishes the "Public Library Freedom to Read Act" to create standards and processes for material selection and withdrawal in Michigan public libraries, effective upon enactment of HB 6035.

Requires public libraries to adopt or amend policies within 90 days identifying standards for material selection and withdrawal, a process for reconsideration requests, and conditions for reviewing requests (including that requesters must have fully reviewed the material).

Designates the library director or chief executive as having final responsibility for material selection and withdrawal, with authority to delegate to other individuals.

Prohibits reconsideration requests based on the author's or material's religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or familial status, and bars removal based on subject matter or viewpoint unless the material is adjudicated obscene.

Authorizes the Attorney General, service area residents, or contracted area residents to bring civil actions for injunctive relief or mandamus to prevent unlawful material removal or compel return of removed materials to the collection.
