HB 6248 Summary

• Beginning with the 2027-2028 school year, school districts, intermediate school districts, and public school academies must incorporate 1 unit of instruction on African-American, Indigenous People, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latin American/Hispanic American/Caribbean American, Arab American/North African/Chaldean American, and Jewish American history into history curricula.

• Each required history unit must cover contributions of the respective groups in government, arts, humanities, and sciences; state and regional history including discriminatory policies; and civil rights advancement from the nineteenth century onward.

• The superintendent of public instruction shall develop instructional materials aligned with state social studies standards and created with input from cultural centers, community members, experts, and scholars for each group.

• School districts may deliver instruction through virtual courses or online learning and must allow flexibility for teachers to incorporate units into existing lesson plans and non-social studies curricula.

• Amends section 1278 to require state board curriculum standards include age- and grade-appropriate instruction on institutional discrimination and oppression against marginalized populations protected under the Elliott-Larsen civil rights act.
