Prohibits employers from discharging employees who are candidates or intend to become candidates for public office.

Establishes civil fines of up to $1,000 for employer violations, enforceable by county prosecutors or the attorney general.

Allows aggrieved employees to file civil actions seeking damages including lost wages and injunctive relief, with courts awarding costs and reasonable attorney fees to prevailing employees.

Applies to all employers with one or more employees in Michigan, with definitions of "candidate" based on the Michigan campaign finance act.

Defers application to existing collective bargaining agreements and employment agreements until they expire, are terminated, amended, extended, or renewed.
