Beginning with the 2027-2028 school year, all Michigan public schools must incorporate one unit of age- and grade-appropriate instruction in each of seven ethnic/cultural histories: Black, Indigenous People, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latin American/Hispanic American/Caribbean American, Middle Eastern/North African/Chaldean American, Jewish American, and European American

Each required unit of instruction must cover contributions to government, arts, humanities, and sciences; regional history in Michigan and the Midwest; history of discriminatory policies (where applicable); and contributions to civil rights advancement from the nineteenth century onward

The Superintendent of Public Instruction must adopt or develop instructional materials for each history unit, created with input from relevant cultural centers, community members, experts, and scholars, and aligned with state social studies standards

Schools may deliver instruction through virtual courses or online instruction, and instructors are given flexibility to incorporate units into preexisting lesson plans across curricula beyond social studies

All instruction must be appropriate for pupils of all backgrounds and disabilities and must not promote bias or discrimination against any group protected under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act
