Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, parents or legal guardians may opt their child out of the workforce readiness assessment portion of the Michigan Merit Examination by submitting a waiver to the school by February 28 of the testing year

The Michigan Department of Education must develop and post the opt-out waiver form on its website

The department must consult with representatives from Michigan business, manufacturing, and skilled trades organizations to create an informational letter about the purpose and benefits of the workforce readiness assessment

School districts, intermediate school districts, and public school academies must provide the informational letter to all grade 11 students and their parents/guardians by December 31 of the school year in which the test will be administered

The bill only takes effect if Senate Bill No. 349 of the 103rd Legislature is also enacted into law
