HF 2684 Summary

• Amends Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 197.75, subdivision 1 to broaden educational benefits eligibility for surviving spouses and children of deceased veterans.

• Defines "deceased veteran" as a veteran who was a Minnesota resident within six months of service entry or at any time while serving in the United States armed forces and died as a result of that service, as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

• Defines "eligible child" as a natural or adopted son or daughter of a deceased veteran who is a student making satisfactory academic progress at an eligible postsecondary institution in Minnesota.

• Defines "eligible spouse" as the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran and requires eligible veterans to have been Minnesota residents at time of enlistment and have no remaining military or veteran-related educational assistance benefits.

• Effective date: July 1, 2010.
