Defines "peace officer" as an employee of a city with a merit system established under section 44.02 who is licensed by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training, charged with crime prevention and enforcement, and has full arrest powers.

Extends the probationary period for newly hired peace officers from 6 months to 12 months.

Allows peace officers to be dismissed summarily during the probationary period without compliance with section 44.08, provided the dismissal is in writing and reported to the board.

Applies to all peace officers hired under Minnesota Statutes, chapter 44, on or after the bill's enactment date.
