Amend Minnesota Statutes sections 177.253 and 177.254 to modify mandatory work and meal break requirements for employees.

Employers must allow employees up to 15 minutes of rest break time within each four consecutive hours of work to use the nearest convenient restroom.

Employers must permit employees working eight or more consecutive hours at least 30 minutes to eat a meal.

Employers with fewer than five employees operating a retail location are exempt from rest and meal break requirements but must allow employees adequate time to use restrooms and eat meals.

Both provisions become effective October 1, 2010, and allow employers and employees to establish different break schedules through collective bargaining agreements.
