Minors authorized to own a private passenger vehicle under Minnesota law may contract to purchase automobile insurance (reparation security) on that vehicle.

Insurance contracts entered into by eligible minors are fully binding and enforceable on the same basis as if the minor were an adult.

Insurers retain full discretion to determine whether to issue coverage to a minor and may apply underwriting standards to any aspect of the coverage.

Effective the day following final enactment, signed into law April 26, 2010.
