Commissioner of public safety shall issue special plates bearing the inscription "FIREFIGHTER RETIRED" to retired fire department members who receive state aid under chapter 69 and provide a letter from their fire chief attesting to retirement status.

Eligible applicants must be registered owners of a passenger automobile, pickup truck, van, or self-propelled recreational vehicle and must pay the standard registration tax plus a $10 fee per set of two plates.

Applicants may not be issued more than two sets of special plates for motor vehicles registered to them.

Special plate design shall be determined by the commissioner of public safety.

Special plates may be transferred to another eligible vehicle for a $5 fee, despite other conflicting provisions in law.
