Health care facilities cannot employ individuals to perform surgical technology tasks unless they hold a certified surgical technician credential from a nationally recognized certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists.

Individuals with military training in surgical technology from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or United States Public Health Service are eligible for employment as surgical technologists.

Health care facilities may employ non-certified individuals if they make a diligent effort to hire qualified candidates, document those efforts, and retain records at the facility.

Licensed practitioners acting within their scope of practice and students in training under physician supervision are exempt from the certification requirement.

Individuals qualifying for employment must complete 15 hours of continuing education annually to maintain their qualified status.
