General town elections must be held on the second Tuesday in March, except as provided in subdivision 2 or when moved for bad weather under section 365.51.

Towns that have adopted an alternative November election date may return to March elections by unanimous town board vote, after conducting at least two elections on the alternative date, with the change requiring voter approval at the next general election.

The return-to-March resolution must include a plan to shorten or lengthen officer terms to provide an orderly transition to the March election schedule.

Town supervisors elected in November under four-year terms may adopt a six-year term option through town board resolution or voter resolution at an annual town meeting, effective upon voter approval at the next general election.

The six-year term resolution must include a transition plan for an orderly shift to the new term length.
