Teachers who complete probationary period elect to have five-year contracts with school districts instead of continuing contracts, with terms based on standard or extended school calendar.

Contracts remain in full force for five years and can only be terminated by majority board vote before April 1 (for grounds in subdivision 9) or July 1 (for grounds in subdivisions 10-11), or through discharge or teacher resignation before April 1.

At conclusion of five-year contract period, board may or may not renew; board must provide written notice of nonrenewal before July 1 and must provide written reasons within 10 days if teacher requests.

Teachers must receive written notice before contract termination with grounds stated in reasonable detail and right to request hearing before board or arbitration within 14 days for certain grounds.

Revisor of statutes shall change all references from "continuing contract" to "five-year contract" throughout Minnesota Statutes chapters 120A to 129 and Minnesota Rules.
