County and regional jail boards may authorize sheriffs or regional jail superintendents to enter into agreements to house offenders from other states.

Extradition requirements under chapter 629 do not apply to out-of-state offenders accepted under these agreements, and sheriffs have express authority to return offenders to their state of origin upon request.

County boards may require persons convicted of crimes and confined in county jails, workhouses, or correctional facilities to pay for room, board, clothing, medical, dental, and other correctional services.

Charges for inmate room and board may be assessed for any time for which the person receives credit for time served against the sentence imposed as a result of conviction.

The chief executive officer or sheriff may waive payment costs if the person lacks ability to pay, payment would create undue hardship, prospects for payment are poor, or extenuating circumstances exist; restitution obligations take priority over room and board payments.
