Certified overdimensional load escort drivers with a certificate issued under section 299D.085 may stop vehicles and direct traffic while escorting legal overdimensional loads, with stopped vehicles proceeding only on instruction from the escort driver or police officer.

The Commissioner of Public Safety shall establish and administer an escort driver certification program requiring applicants to be at least 18 years old, possess a valid operator's license, and complete a commissioner-developed certification course.

Permits for overdimensional loads must specify the minimum number of escort vehicles required and whether operators must be certified peace officers or certified escort drivers holding current certificates.

Certificate fees shall be assessed to applicants and calculated to cover the commissioner's cost of establishing and administering the program.

Violating any provision of the escort driver requirements is a petty misdemeanor; the law became effective one year after publication of adopted rules in the State Register.
