Requires health care facilities to employ only surgical technologists who have completed an accredited educational program and hold a certified surgical technician credential from a nationally recognized certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists.

Allows health care facilities to employ unqualified individuals only after making diligent efforts to hire qualified surgical technologists and maintaining written records of recruitment efforts.

Exempts licensed practitioners acting within their scope of practice and students in training under physician supervision from the qualification requirements.

Requires individuals employed under existing verification (those already practicing in Minnesota on the effective date) or with military/Public Health Service training to complete 15 hours of continuing education annually to remain qualified.

Does not repeal or modify existing laws relating to the supervision of surgical technologists.
