S.F. No. 3242 Summary

• Expands the definition of "BB gun" to include airsoft guns that reasonably appear to be realistic firearms and fire less-than-lethal plastic projectiles weighing 10.0 grains or less

• Airsoft guns are excluded from BB gun classification if permanently colored bright yellow, blaze orange, neon green, or bright pink on at least 80 percent of surface area visible in daylight or normal lighting when held or holstered

• Increases penalties for possession of BB guns and airsoft guns on school property: felony with up to 2 years imprisonment or $5,000 fine for use or brandishing while knowingly on school property; gross misdemeanor for possession or storage on school property

• Updates definitions in Minnesota Statutes sections 609.66, 609.713, and 624.7181 to consistently apply the expanded BB gun definition across school safety and firearm display statutes

• Effective August 1, 2010, applying to incidents occurring on or after that date
