School boards may renew an expiring referendum through board action instead of requiring a public election, if the per pupil amount and term remain the same as originally approved by voters.

School board must adopt a written resolution by June 15 authorizing renewal after holding a public meeting and allowing public testimony.

Renewal resolution becomes effective 60 days after adoption unless a petition signed by over 30 percent of registered voters is filed to revoke it, triggering a revocation election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

School districts must submit the adopted resolution to the commissioner and county auditor by September 1 of the year the levy is to be certified.

School boards may initiate renewal no more than two fiscal years before the referendum expires, with expiration defined as the last fiscal year the referendum generates revenue.
