Arechiga was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and served as a driver and gunner in the 493rd Field Artillery Battalion and 12th Armored Division "Hellcats"

Arechiga participated in major combat operations including the Battle of the Bulge, the battle at Herrlisheim, and the liberation of Colmar where German forces were ousted from their last French stronghold

The French Legion of Honor, founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is France's most prestigious award and recognizes service to the French nation
