On March 31, 2012, a semitruck collided with a Canadian Pacific tanker train on U.S. Highway 59 in Plummer, Minnesota, releasing 30,000 gallons of aromatic concentrate into a nearby ditch and causing the truck to catch fire.

Plummer Volunteer Fire Department members arrived within 5-10 minutes of the first emergency call, extinguished the truck fire, contacted a regional hazardous materials team from Fargo-Moorhead, and coordinated with the highway department to contain the spill.

The fire department evacuated Plummer residents to safety and coordinated response efforts that contained the spill, removed the semitruck, and allowed residents to return home within ten hours.

Senate extends congratulations to the Plummer Volunteer Fire Department for their prompt and professional response to the dangerous situation.

Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an enrolled copy of the resolution and transmit it to Plummer Fire Chief Phil Zimpel.
