HF 3033 Summary

• Creates a pilot grant program with two grants: one for an eligible organization serving girls of color in Ramsey County and one for an organization serving one or more counties in greater Minnesota.

• Defines eligible grant recipients as community-based STEM organizations and Minnesota public schools with experience serving girls of color (females through age 17 who self-identify as American Indian, Asian, Black, or Hispanic).

• Grant funds must support either best practices like mentorships and internships to increase STEM awareness and access, or financial assistance for child care, transportation, and housing to help girls balance STEM education with work and family responsibilities.

• Requires grant recipients to develop replicable model programs for their respective regions (Twin Cities metropolitan area and greater Minnesota) by January 15, 2019.

• Appropriates funds for fiscal year 2017 as a onetime appropriation available until expended, with program effective July 1, 2016.
