Permits military personnel stationed or deployed outside Minnesota to apply to their sheriff for an extension of their handgun carry permit.

Eligible applicants must be active-duty members of the U.S. armed forces, National Guard, or Coast Guard who are unlikely to return to Minnesota before permit expiration due to military commitment and are not prohibited from firearm possession.

Applicants must submit an affidavit to the appropriate sheriff between 90 days before and the permit's expiration date, specifying the requested extension period matching their expected military deployment duration.

Sheriffs must grant extensions at no fee to qualified applicants and issue a new permit card reflecting the extended expiration date; in-person requests and recent firearms training are not required.

Permit holders must apply for renewal at the first opportunity after returning to Minnesota for a reasonably sufficient period, with 90 days or more presumed sufficient; renewal provisions apply to all renewals under this provision.
