Students must correctly answer at least 60 of 100 civics test questions based on the U.S. citizenship and immigration services naturalization exam to receive a high school diploma, effective for students graduating in 2016-2017 school year and later.

Schools and districts must integrate the civics test into social studies curriculum and may allow students to begin taking it in grade 7 with unlimited retakes until passing.

Students with disabilities may be exempted if their individualized education program team determines the requirement is inappropriate, and the test may be administered in languages other than English for English learner students.

No fees may be charged to students, schools, or districts for administering the civics test.

Schools must record civics test passage on student transcripts and report total numbers of students taking the test and passing scores by grade to the state commissioner.
