Requires all licensed teachers renewing their continuing license to complete at least one hour of suicide prevention training based on nationally recognized evidence-based programs and practices.

Initial focus must be on understanding key warning signs of early-onset mental illness in children and adolescents, with subsequent renewal periods allowing for more in-depth topics including mental illness trauma, accommodations, parental roles, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, autism, and de-escalation methods.

Applies to teachers renewing licenses beginning August 1, 2017.

Exempts teachers who do not provide direct instruction, including counselors, school psychologists, school nurses, school social workers, audiovisual directors and coordinators, and recreation personnel.
