$600,000 appropriated from the general fund in fiscal year 2017 to the commissioner of agriculture for a grant to Second Harvest Heartland.

Grant compensates agricultural producers and processors for costs to harvest and package surplus fruits, vegetables, or other agricultural commodities that would otherwise go unharvested, discarded, or sold in secondary markets.

Grant serves the six Feeding America food banks that operate in Minnesota on behalf of the organization.

Surplus commodities must be distributed statewide to food shelves and other eligible charitable organizations receiving food from the food banks.

All surplus food acquired under this appropriation must originate from Minnesota producers and processors.
