Department of Education must adopt the most recent National Association of Sport and Physical Education kindergarten through grade 12 standards and benchmarks for physical education as required state academic standards, with modifications allowed to accommodate state interests while maintaining the standards' purpose and integrity.

Department must make available sample assessments for school districts to assess students' mastery of physical education standards beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.

Physical education must be taught by teachers licensed to teach physical education who are adequately prepared and regularly participate in professional development activities.

Students may be excused from physical education class if a physician certifies physical activity will jeopardize their health, if excusal meets their individualized education program or 504 plan needs, or if a parent requests exemption on religious grounds; students with disabilities must receive modifications or adaptations.

Schools are strongly encouraged not to exclude students in kindergarten through grade 5 from recess due to punishment or disciplinary action.
