SF397 Summary

• Commissioner of public safety shall establish a Blue Alert system to identify, locate, and apprehend individuals suspected of killing or seriously wounding local, state, or federal law enforcement officers.

• Commissioner must develop criteria and procedures for the system in consultation with the Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training, Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association, Minnesota Sheriffs Association, and other specified organizations by October 1, 2015.

• Blue Alert system shall include all state and local agencies capable of providing urgent information, together with public and commercial television and radio broadcasters and other private entities that volunteer to participate.

• Commissioner may notify authorities and entities outside the state upon verification that established criteria have been met.

• A person who knowingly makes a false report triggering a Blue Alert is guilty of a misdemeanor.
