HF1180 Summary

• Prohibits drivers from using wireless communications devices to initiate, compose, read, or send electronic messages while a vehicle is in motion or part of traffic.

• Prohibits drivers from using cellular phones to make calls or listen to phone calls while a vehicle is in motion or part of traffic.

• Prohibits drivers from viewing video content on wireless communications devices while a vehicle is in motion or part of traffic, except for global positioning or navigation systems.

• Permits use of wireless communications devices in voice-activated or hands-free mode for phone calls and electronic messages, and allows use for emergency assistance or when a person's life or safety is in immediate danger.

• Establishes a fine of $225 plus the uniform fine schedule amount for second or subsequent violations; effective August 1, 2018.
