Amends Minnesota Statutes section 609.2231, subdivision 2 to enhance criminal penalties for assaulting firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and hospital emergency department healthcare workers.

Reduces the penalty for physical assault causing demonstrable bodily harm from a felony (up to 2 years imprisonment or $4,000 fine) to a gross misdemeanor.

Creates a felony offense with up to 3 years imprisonment or $6,000 fine for physical assault causing demonstrable bodily harm or intentionally throwing or transferring bodily fluids or feces at these protected persons.

Applies to municipal and volunteer firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, physicians, nurses, and other hospital emergency department healthcare providers performing their duties.

Effective August 1, 2018 for crimes committed on or after that date.
