HF 2258 Summary

• Commissioner of Education shall designate up to six school districts or charter schools as rollout sites representing urban, suburban, nonurban, and charter schools, with sites notified by August 1, 2017 and able to opt-out or opt-in by September 1, 2017.

• Commissioner must establish a task force including rollout sites, parent groups, community representatives, state demographer, and representatives from Asian American, Latino, African Heritage, Native American, disability, and women's economic status organizations to develop best practices for disaggregated student data by February 1, 2018.

• Commissioner shall disaggregate and report student data by specific demographic categories including race, ethnicity, home language, English learners, immigrant/refugee status, homelessness, foster care status, and free or reduced-price lunch status, with effective dates of 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years.

• School districts must inform parents and guardians that providing information on student categories beyond federal requirements is optional and will not violate student privacy.

• Appropriates $300,000 from general fund for fiscal year 2018, allowing rollout sites to receive one-time grants of up to $50,000 each for the 2018-2019 school year.
