Commissioner shall issue special retired law enforcement license plates to registered owners of passenger automobiles, noncommercial one-ton pickup trucks, motorcycles, or recreational vehicles who are retired peace officers with at least 10 years of service and good standing separation.

Applicant must provide a letter from the chief law enforcement officer affirming retired status and service requirements, and pay a $10 fee per set of plates plus standard registration taxes and fees.

Commissioner shall design an emblem and inscription for the special plates in consultation with interested law enforcement agencies and organizations.

Special plates may be transferred to another qualified motor vehicle registered to the same individual by paying a $5 transfer fee.

Special plates are exempt from section 168.1293, subdivision 2, and take effect January 1, 2018.
