The Board of Medical Practice, Board of Nursing, Board of Dentistry, Board of Optometry, and Board of Podiatric Medicine must require licensees with authority to prescribe controlled substances to obtain at least two hours of continuing education credit on best practices in prescribing opioids and controlled substances as part of licensure renewal.

Licensees are not required to complete more than two credit hours of continuing education on opioid and controlled substances prescribing before the requirement expires.

The subdivision requiring opioid and controlled substances continuing education expires January 1, 2023.

$5,000 is appropriated in fiscal year 2019 from the state government special revenue fund to each of the five health licensing boards for costs associated with the continuing education requirement; each appropriation is one-time only.

The requirement becomes effective January 1, 2019.
