Local school boards and charter school boards must adopt a policy addressing how the school district will respond to the death of an enrolled student.

Policy must cover district communications regarding student death notice to students, parents, guardians, teachers, and staff.

Policy must address availability of grief counseling for students and remembrances during graduation ceremonies or other school events.

Policy must include provisions for physical memorials such as benches and trees.

Schools may consult with the department's School Safety Technical Assistance Council when developing the required policy; effective for the 2018-2019 school year and later.
