Board-approved teacher preparation programs for elementary education, early childhood education, special education, and reading intervention must include instruction on dyslexia as defined in Minnesota statute section 125A.01, subdivision 2.

Dyslexia instruction must cover the nature and symptoms of dyslexia, available resources for affected students, evidence-based instructional strategies including the structured literacy approach, best practices for assisting students and parents, and outcomes of intervention versus lack of intervention.

Teacher preparation programs may consult with the Department of Education, including the dyslexia specialist under section 120B.122, to develop the required dyslexia instruction.

All teacher preparation programs must continue to include research-based best practices in reading instruction that enable candidates to teach reading in their content areas and prepare early childhood and elementary teachers for reading instruction assessments.

School districts retain authority to select their schools' reading programs and curricula.
