Maplewood Firefighters Relief Association is prohibited from distributing benefits or paying expenses (except administrative costs) until obtaining Maplewood city council consent to any plan amendments adopted since January 1, 2018 that convert the plan from defined benefit to a hybrid or defined contribution plan, or paying the city an amount owed.

The relief association must pay the city of Maplewood the lesser of: the surplus over full funding as of December 31, 2017, or all city contributions made to the relief association since the fire department's establishment on January 1, 1997.

Any payment to the city must be credited to its general fund and used for firefighting or emergency medical services expenditures.

The Maplewood Firefighters Relief Association is dissolved effective December 31, 2018, with the board of trustees responsible for transferring assets and winding up affairs per Minnesota Statutes section 424B.20.

If the board of trustees fails to complete dissolution activities by January 31, 2019, the city of Maplewood shall appoint a three-member board to complete the dissolution process.
