First three consecutive years of teaching experience in Minnesota at a single district constitutes probationary period; probationary periods in subsequent districts are one year instead of being eliminated.

Teachers during probationary period must complete at least 120 days of teaching service each year, with evaluations occurring at least three times periodically per school year with first evaluation within 90 days.

School boards may discharge or demote probationary teachers for any cause specified in statute with written notice at least 30 days in advance; probationary teachers have no right of appeal.

Principals and assistant principals promoted internally from teacher or assistant principal positions may negotiate probationary periods of up to two years with the exclusive representative of school principals.

All provisions are effective for the 2019-2020 school year and later.
