Intentional violations of subdivision 1 or 7 resulting in substantial bodily harm to a pet or companion animal are punishable by imprisonment up to one year or fine up to $3,000, or both.

Intentional violations resulting in death or great bodily harm to a pet or companion animal are punishable by imprisonment up to two years or fine up to $5,000, or both.

Violations done to threaten, intimidate, or terrorize another person are punishable by imprisonment up to two years or fine up to $5,000 for substantial bodily harm, or up to eight years or fine up to $10,000 for death or great bodily harm.

Violations resulting in death or great bodily harm with extreme physical pain or prolonged suffering are punishable by imprisonment up to eight years or fine up to $10,000.

Service animals receive enhanced protections, with violations causing death or great bodily harm punishable by imprisonment up to four years or fine up to $10,000.
