Drivers must safely move to the farthest lane when approaching authorized emergency vehicles with activated lights on two-lane roads, if possible.

On roads with more than two lanes, drivers must leave a full lane vacant between their vehicle and the emergency vehicle, if possible.

When lane changes are impossible or on one-lane roads, drivers must reduce speed to a reasonable and prudent rate until completely passing the emergency vehicle.

Peace officers may issue citations within four hours of an incident based on probable cause, including crew reports containing vehicle description and license plate number.

Towing vehicles with activated flashing lights are included in the definition of authorized emergency vehicles for purposes of these passing requirements.

Provisions effective August 1, 2018, and apply to the same passing requirements for freeway service patrol, road maintenance, utility company, and construction vehicles with warning lights activated.
