S.F. No. 3031 - Child Safety Curriculum

• Charter schools and school districts must adopt and provide age-appropriate child safety curriculum for students in kindergarten through grade 12, delivered by local law enforcement or independent self-defense experts using videos and role-play demonstrations.

• Students must receive at least 45 minutes of child safety instruction once monthly during the school year, with classroom discussion following videos or demonstrations.

• Curriculum must cover nine minimum topics including stranger danger, nonstranger danger, body protection techniques, assertiveness, appropriate and inappropriate touch, body warning signs, situational awareness, code words, and how to obtain law enforcement assistance.

• Charter schools are required to comply with the child safety curriculum requirement consistent with the new statute section 121A.24.

• The requirement is effective for the 2018-2019 school year and later.
