Amends Minnesota Statutes section 120A.35 to require school boards provide annual notice to parents about the district's policy on pupil absences for religious observance, effective for the 2018-2019 school year and later.

Maintains the existing requirement that school districts make reasonable efforts to accommodate pupils who wish to be excused from curricular activities for religious observance.

Amends section 120A.40 to allow school boards to consider the community's religious observances when adopting annual school calendars.

Allows districts to begin the school year before Labor Day to accommodate construction or remodeling projects of $400,000 or more, cooperative agreements with districts undergoing such projects, or agreements with adjoining state school districts.
